Why We Repeat the Same Relationship Patterns With Different People
Years ago, I started receiving text messages from a man who refused to tell me who he was.
He clearly knew me, and he wanted me to figure out his identity. So he started giving me clues.
At first, I played along.
The problem was that his clues weren’t helping.
Every time he revealed something that he seemed to think would make his identity obvious, I thought of another man it could be.
And then another.
And another.
Eventually, I realized there were around five possible candidates.
Essentially, every ex-boyfriend I’d had.
I remember looking at this list and thinking, This is really interesting.
These men were not identical. They looked different. They had different personalities, backgrounds, interests, and even different astrological signs. I had experienced every relationship as its own story, with its own problems and explanations.
But suddenly, looking at all of them together, I could see something I hadn’t been able to see while I was inside each individual relationship.
They all made me feel remarkably similar.
At that point, I became so interested in mapping the pattern that I completely forgot about the man texting me.
I stopped replying.
Eventually, he had to tell me who he was because I had become completely unresponsive.
He wanted me to figure out the person.
The pattern had become more interesting than the person.
And that realization changed the way I approached healing.
What if these aren’t separate problems?
For a long time, I experienced my relationships as individual experiences.
I would meet someone who seemed like a great prospect. He would be attractive, interesting, attentive. Before entering the relationship, I felt I was agreeing to one thing.
Then the dynamic would change.
Control would enter the relationship. There would be criticism about my body, who I was, where I went, or who I spent time with. Some partners cheated. Some blamed me for their anger or behavior. Respect disappeared.
After enough experiences like this, I started drawing conclusions about myself.
Maybe there was something wrong with me.
Maybe I was difficult to love.
Maybe my standards were too high.
Maybe I needed to accept less if I wanted a partner.
Eventually, dating became so draining that being alone seemed preferable.
But that strange conversation with the anonymous texter had given me a perspective I hadn’t had before.
What if these weren’t eight completely separate stories?
What if there was something connecting them?
So I started mapping.
And once I stopped focusing exclusively on the individual men, I began seeing things I hadn’t been able to see while I was consumed by each relationship.
Why do we repeat the same relationship patterns?
I don’t believe there is one universal answer to that question. The same visible pattern can have very different roots.
In my case, understanding mine required looking beyond what these men had done and becoming willing to see myself inside the relationships too.
This was the uncomfortable part.
It would have been much easier to stop at everything these men had done wrong.
And there were things they were responsible for. Recognizing my own participation didn’t make me responsible for another person’s controlling behavior, betrayal, infidelity, or choices.
But I began to see my own position inside these relationships.
I repeatedly chose emotionally unavailable men.
Then I overgave.
I could see insecurity underneath some of my choices, but I could also see other parts of myself that had been involved. I wanted excitement. I wanted fun. There was a rebellious side of me that was attracted to certain dynamics.
I could see ways I tried to create security through giving.
I could see where I gave too much power to the relationship.
I could see what I tolerated.
And I could see that while I couldn’t change any of these men, there were things within the pattern that actually belonged to me.
That realization didn’t leave me with more blame.
It left me with somewhere to work.
The pattern became more interesting than the person
There is an enormous amount of energy we can spend trying to understand other people.
We replay conversations. Analyze behavior. Try to understand why someone betrayed us, rejected us, controlled us, disappeared, cheated, changed, or failed to become the person we believed they could be.
Sometimes understanding what happened is important.
But sometimes we can spend years trying to understand another person and still be standing in exactly the same place.
I know I spent an enormous amount of energy doing that.
Eventually, I became more interested in something else.
The repetition.
Because once I could see that very different men had repeatedly brought me into a familiar emotional position, the latest man’s psychology was no longer the only thing worth examining.
There was something in the pattern that had information for me.
And I wanted to know what it was.
That shift in attention became incredibly important in my own healing journey and, eventually, in the way I approached healing work itself.
When the story changes
As I continued working with the pattern, one of the significant dynamics I eventually encountered was my relationship with my father.
I recognized that I had been unconsciously looking for something connected to my father through my romantic relationships. There was also a systemic dynamic underneath the choices I had been making.
This wasn’t obvious when I was focused on the individual men.
It became visible when I looked underneath the repetition.
I decided to work with it in a healing session I facilitated for myself.
And through that process, something became very clear:
I don’t choose this anymore.
Twenty-four hours later, I connected with the man who would become my husband.
I know how extraordinary that sounds.
I don’t share it as a formula or a promise that working on your father wound will manifest your partner in 24 hours. It is simply what happened in my life.
But for me, the timing was impossible to ignore.
Something had shifted.
I wasn’t looking for my father through my romantic relationships in the same way anymore.
I wasn’t approaching partnership from the same internal position.
And suddenly, I was available for something different.
We aren’t meant to live inside our wound stories forever
Looking back, I think this is one of the most important things that experience taught me about healing.
The purpose wasn’t for me to discover the father wound and then spend the rest of my life talking about my father wound.
The wound gave me information.
The relationships gave me information.
The repetition gave me information.
They revealed something I couldn’t see when I was focused exclusively on the people involved.
And once I could see it, I had somewhere new to go.
I believe there is a point in the healing journey where understanding needs to become movement.
We can become very sophisticated at telling the story of what happened to us. We can know the wound, understand the family dynamic, recognize the pattern, and have language for almost every part of our experience.
All of that can be valuable.
But the story of the wound isn’t meant to become the destination.
We extract the learning so we can continue the journey.
Eventually, healing becomes visible in the life we are able to live afterward.
For me, it eventually looked like a completely different experience of partnership.
For someone else, the repeating pattern may have nothing to do with romantic relationships.
But I still think there is something valuable in that strange text conversation I had all those years ago.
Sometimes we become so consumed with understanding the latest person that we miss what the repetition itself is showing us.
I had spent years trying to understand the men.
Then one day, almost accidentally, the pattern became more interesting than the person.
And that changed where I was looking.
Break the Loop
If you’ve started recognizing something in your own life that seems to keep returning through different people or circumstances, I’m hosting a free community experience on October 14 to explore exactly that.
BREAK THE LOOP is a live Community Healing + Master Class where you’ll have the opportunity to bring one repeating pattern from your own life into the space.
We’ll look beneath its latest expression and work with what may be maintaining the repetition.
Because recognizing the pattern can be the beginning.
Changing your relationship with it is where something new becomes possible.
